To me, this evolving character relationship was the brilliant heart of the story, which is brought to a breathless climax and satisfying resolution. (My heart broke when Collin opens a drawer and discovers hoarded nail clippings.) It was painful to experience the stress in their relationship, especially through Collin's eyes, as he wants to protect his father's secret yet doesn't know how to help him. Collin's mother's death triggers his father - already something of a collector - never to let anything go, and the house fills with junk.
